Position Summary:
The Digital Imaging Specialist, within the Archiving department of the Library and Information Science division, is responsible for executing efficient and accurate digitization processes for archival materials. This role requires a keen eye for detail, strong technical expertise, and a deep understanding of library and information science principles.
Responsibilities:
1. Conduct high-quality digital imaging of archival materials, including photographs, manuscripts, maps, and other media, using specialized scanning equipment and software.
2. Ensure the preservation and integrity of digitized materials by adhering to established archival standards and best practices.
3. Perform quality control checks to guarantee accurate and consistent digitization results, including image resolution, color accuracy, and file formats.
4. Collaborate with archivists and librarians to identify and prioritize materials for digitization, based on preservation needs, research value, and user demand.
5. Assist in the development and implementation of digitization workflows, ensuring efficiency and productivity.
6. Maintain a comprehensive and accurate inventory of digitized materials, including metadata, using library management systems or other appropriate tools.
7. Conduct regular maintenance and calibration of digitization equipment to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
8. Stay up-to-date with emerging trends, technologies, and standards in the field of digital imaging, and propose innovative solutions to enhance digitization processes.
9. Provide training and guidance to staff or volunteers involved in digitization initiatives, ensuring their adherence to established guidelines and procedures.
10. Collaborate with other departments or external partners to facilitate access to digitized materials through online platforms, databases, or other means.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science, Archival Studies, or a related field.
2. Proven experience in digital imaging and preservation techniques, preferably in a library or archival setting.
3. Proficient knowledge of digitization equipment, software, and standards, such as flatbed scanners, digital cameras, Adobe Photoshop, TIFF, JPEG, etc.
4. Familiarity with metadata standards and practices, including Dublin Core, MODS, or other relevant schemas.
5. Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy while working with delicate or fragile materials.
6. Excellent organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
8. Knowledge of preservation principles and best practices for handling and storing archival materials.
9. Familiarity with library management systems and digital asset management systems is advantageous.
10. Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work independently with minimal supervision.
